Dr. Welte earned his MD from the University of Freiburg in Germany. He then joined the Department of Nephrology at the University of Freiburg (Chief: Prof. Gerd Walz) for residencies in Internal Medicine (board certification: 2021), and Nephrology (board certification: 2024). From 2017 to 2019, Dr. Welte was a postdoctoral researcher at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel (Advisor: Helge Grosshans), where he investigated molecular functions of RNA-binding proteins that control stem cell identities. In 2025, Thomas welte joined the Department of Nephrology, University Hospital Zurich as attending physician and research group leader.
Dr. Welte’s research combines genomics, imaging, and genetic screening to explore gene regulatory networks involved in tissue development and repair, with a particular focus on the kidney. In his clinical research, he analyzes high-dimensional clinical data to improve treatment strategies for kidney disease. He has received funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Advanced Clinician Scientist Program at the University of Zurich, and is an associated member of the NCCR RNA & Disease and CRC 1453 Nephrogenetics.
